Did you just land your dream B2B client or finally got promoted at work, but now you feel like you have NO clue what you’re doing?
Imposter syndrome is the all-too-common (especially among women!) feeling that you got where you are out of pure luck—instead of the hard work and determination that it likely took to get there. This can lead to feelings of incompetence, self-doubt, and skepticism that make you feel like a fraud. And you’re definitely not alone, sis—but don’t let imposter syndrome get the best of you!
Instead of giving into negative self-talk, learn some ways to overcome your imposter syndrome and act like the impressive and qualified woman that you are!
Don’t Let Perfection be the Enemy of Good
We know you set incredibly high standards for yourself—and that’s nothing to be ashamed of! When it comes to your personal and professional life, though, perfection is an impossible standard to hold yourself to. A lot of times, it’s what leads to that feeling of imposter syndrome in the first place.
Instead of feeling inadequate because you’re not doing everything 100% “perfect” all of the time, that’s no reason to feel like you’re not accomplishing anything! Stop feeling like a failure when you only get 90% or 95% of the way there. Don’t view small mistakes as a reason to get down on yourself and start questioning your position. Instead, reframe them as a great way to help you learn and continue to evolve into an even better leader!
Flip the Script Inside Your Head
Stop filling your head with negative self-talk and feelings of inadequacy! It’s time to change the narrative. You’re your own toughest critic, so start with YOU! When you are too hard on yourself, your imposter syndrome will start to spiral. So instead of thinking things like “I have no idea what I’m doing,” or “I’m not qualified for this job!” remind yourself of all the hard work and time you put in to get where you are.
It’s also helpful to turn the negatives on their head or find a silver lining when you’re really stuck. If you feel overwhelmed by a project, think about all the amazing things you’ll learn and take away from the challenge. That will help you keep your eyes on the prize and stop your inner mean girl in her tracks!
Lead with Your Swagger
It can be tempting to want to imitate the leadership style of others who you admire and focus on your shortcomings, which makes it harder to love the skin you’re in. Instead, own your authentic leadership style and honor your true self by playing to your strengths.
Celebrate all the times you’ve slayed! Keep a running list in your phone of all of your great work you can turn to when you’re feeling down. You’ll realize that you’ve been rocking it like a boss and see all of the strides that you’ve made, which can be a powerful reminder of your badassery on the toughest of days. With all that evidence-based confidence, you’ll have the courage you need to make bold moves to level up your career with swagger!
